Pioneers in the Treatment of Eating Disorders
The Renfrew Center has been the pioneer in the treatment of eating disorders since 1985, with a core focus of empowering patients to change their lives. As the nation’s first residential eating disorder facility, Renfrew has helped more than 100,000 cisgender adolescent girls and adult women, transgender, and non-binary individuals move towards recovery by providing them with the tools they need to succeed in recovery and in life.
The Renfrew Center is privately owned and operated by the Menaged family. Our goal, first and foremost, is the health and well-being of the individuals who come to Renfrew for treatment. That goal will never change.

Our Promise to You
We emphasize a respect for the unique psychology of women, the importance of a collaborative therapeutic relationship and the belief that every patient needs to actively participate in their own growth and recovery. When you choose The Renfrew Center, you can expect:
Positive Outcomes
Our patients make progress. We know first-hand that recovery is not only possible but well within reach, even when it may not feel like it. Research shows that Renfrew alumni continue to improve beyond our treatment program.
Expert, Individualized Care
All programs are supported by clinical staff—psychologists, social workers, nurses, nutritionists, psychiatrists, and physicians—who work with each patient to develop an individually tailored plan for treatment. We value the importance of understanding a patient’s past experiences, culture, sensory profile, unique learning style, abilities, and lived experience.
Evidence-Based Treatment
The Renfrew Center Unified Treatment Model for Eating Disorders® integrates our relational approach with an evidence-based transdiagnostic model, designed to address the needs of a complex medical and psychiatric population.
A Safer & Healing Community
Renfrew provides a safer and healing community in which individuals learn to understand the role the eating disorder has played in their lives, replace their eating disorder behaviors and rituals, and increase flexibility with thoughts to include those that are value-oriented and life-affirming. While our 18 locations are each unique, every facility offers a comfortable, homelike and peaceful environment.
Insurance Coverage
We accept more than 400 insurance plans nationwide, have contracts with most managed care companies for all levels of treatment and are frequently listed as a preferred provider. Renfrew routinely petitions out-of-network carriers to extend benefits to their members.
Accreditation
The Renfrew Center has earned accreditation by the prestigious Joint Commission, a non-profit organization which accredits and certifies more than 19,000 health care organizations in the United States. It guarantees that Renfrew meets or exceeds rigorous standards in providing the utmost quality of care and patient safety. Moreover, The Joint Commission assures that Renfrew continue to evaluate and improve upon current services to provide the highest quality treatment.
Our History
When Renfrew opened in June 1985, we were the first residential facility dedicated exclusively to the treatment of eating disorders—the pioneer in the field. Our initial mission was to provide first-rate treatment to those in recovery and bring national attention to the hidden epidemic of eating disorders.
Today, we offer cutting-edge care at 17 locations across the country and also virtually. Renfrew continues to be a leader in the development of innovative and effective treatment and training approaches, having served more than 100,000 patients. As the first organization, in 1990, to host a national Conference on eating disorders, our Foundation has trained more than 40,000 professionals worldwide.
