The Renfrew Center Welcomes New Alumni Liaison Johanna Kandel

The Renfrew Center, the nation’s first and largest network of eating disorder treatment facilities, today announced the hire of Johanna Kandel as the new Alumni Liaison.

In this position, Ms. Kandel will work with Renfrew’s Alumni Services department to offer a variety of programs that help former patients stay connected to the support, safety and services they received throughout treatment. Renfrew’s alumni community encourages women to share wisdom, strength and hope with one another as they continue on their journey to recovery. 

“We are excited to welcome Johanna as a liaison to our growing alumni community,” said Lara Pence, MBA, PsyD, Director of Alumni Affairs at The Renfrew Center. “With her experience and passion for helping others, Johanna will be a valuable asset to our alumni community and enable us to continue to provide ongoing support.”    

After recovering from a ten-year battle with anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder, Ms. Kandel founded, and is currently the CEO of, The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness, based in West Palm Beach, Florida. Additionally, she authored Life Beyond Your Eating Disorder, which was released September 2010. Ms. Kandel is a member of the Eating Disorders Coalition Board of Directors, Florida team leader for NEDA’s STAR program, founding board member of the Eating Disorders Activist Network, and board member for GirlFuture. An active participant in National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, she has received many awards for her ongoing outreach and advocacy work, including the Jefferson Award for Public Service© and Harlequin Enterprises’ More Than Words Award.  She has appeared on national television programs including NBC Nightly News and The Today Show, and has been profiled in the New York Times and Glamour Magazine.

The Renfrew Center offers a comprehensive range of services that includes residential, day treatment, intensive outpatient, group therapy, individual, family and couples therapy, nutrition therapy and psychiatric consultation for women ages 14 and above. The variety of programming allows treatment to be tailored to an individual’s needs and provides for a gradual step-back into everyday life. The Renfrew Center has 11 facilities in nine states across the country.
