The Renfrew Center Announced as a 2016 Family Business Award Honoree

Recognized by SmartCEO’s Family Business Awards which honors family businesses that make up the backbone of America

The Renfrew Center, celebrating its 30th Anniversary as the nation’s first residential eating disorder treatment facility, has been recognized as a 2016 Family Business Award Honoree. Each year, SmartCEO’s Family Business Awards celebrates the distinguished achievement of 30 of Philadelphia’s top family businesses.

Founded in 1985 by Samuel E. Menaged, JD, The Renfrew Center was built on the land of a 27-acre farm in Philadelphia. As president and CEO of Renfrew, Sam continues to take an ongoing first-hand interest in all aspects of the business. Growing up, the four Menaged children were involved in varying phases of Renfrew’s success, from the initial groundbreaking through expansion of sites across the United States.  Currently, Sam’s daughter, Vanessa, is the Vice President of Professional Relations and Marketing, and his wife, Pamela, has worked in Patient Accounts for the last 15 year.

Sam’s path has always steadily followed a three-fold direction – honing his ability as a business owner, the incorporation of his family into the business and honoring his heartfelt vow to provide cutting edge treatment for those who suffer from eating disorders.

“Over the past quarter century, our multi-generational family-run business, has proudly distinguished itself as the premier eating disorders organization internationally,” stated Sam Menaged. “We have consistently been trailblazers and I fully expect our future to be as rich and innovative as that of our past. Despite numerous attempts by private equity to buy Renfrew, I stay true to my ownership, management style and commitment to the patients who come through our doors – I have no intention of putting that trust in corporate hands.”

Honorees will be profiled in the May/June issue of Philadelphia SmartCEO magazine and celebrated at an awards ceremony in May.

“Family firms make up more than 80 percent of all businesses in North America. Their impact on jobs and the economy is undeniable. Not only are they driving innovation, change and stewardship they are also representatives of the American Dream,” says Jaime Nespor-Zawmon, President of SmartCEO. “We are very proud to recognize the top family businesses in Philadelphia for their impact on the region and their continued dedication to helping it grow and prosper.”
