Clinicians and researchers in the fields of psychology and nutrition have long been aware that there is more to the story of understanding our relationship with food, exercise and care of our bodies. Decades of research in emotion science point to evidence that disordered eating behaviors often develop, and are maintained, due to difficulties with accepting and tolerating difficult emotions.

The goal of this presentation is to educate and empower dietitians to utilize what emotion science has to offer to enhance the vital work they do as nutrition therapists treating complex eating disorders. Having a shared understanding, language and interventions that can be used with consistency by all disciplines in the treatment team will only enhance the potency of treatment overall. This presentation will illustrate the practical application of emotion exposure principles with nutrition therapy.
