According to a census report issued in March of 2015, by 2044 our nation will become a “Majority-Minority Nation” which means that over 50% of our population will be minorities. While this crossover is still projected to be 24 years away, there are some inferences that we can make from the census data. As we approach the crossover point, the way our nation looks will start to change. With this change, the lived experience of what will become the majority population will include systemic racism and oppression, social stigma, and individual stressors that are vastly different than our current majority. As a result, there will be direct implications in our practice, including the impact of identity on mental health.
In this 2 CE training, attendees will increase their understanding of historical oppression in our society, as well as the lived experiences of minorities, enabling clinicians to better meet the current and future needs of the populations they serve.
