Eating Disorders (ED) often develop as a coping skill in response to an individual’s emotional distress. Rigid, inflexible thinking and eating patterns may result and perpetuate the destructive ED cycle. Recent research has found food exposures to be an important element in effectively addressing food rigidity. In recovery work with eating disorder clients, concerns involving food rigidity most often fall under the purview of the dietitian – reinforcing the need for specific training on this complex issue. To increase the knowledge base, as well as comfort level, of the dietitian in supporting clients with food exposures, this presentation will provide an in-depth explanation of exposures, methods for enhancing successful exposures’ outcomes and case study examples.
