Eating disorders are complex and varied in their genesis, and are often paired with co-morbid conditions. Regardless of the specific eating disorder diagnosis, however, they share being disorders of disconnection. In working with this acute population, it is critical to understand the interplay between a patient’s emotional dysregulation and their engagement in relationships in order to help them progress toward recovery. As emotional tolerance and psychological flexibility increase, the need for maladaptive coping behaviors decrease.

Heather Thompson-Brenner, PhD and Lori Ciotti, LICSW, will present on how the Unified Treatment model, an evidence-based, trans-diagnostic approach, can successfully be utilized to treat eating disorders, including application to the treatment of patients with complex diagnosis, and the result of a demonstrable increase in positive outcomes.
