The holidays can be joyous indeed! This time of year, however, can also bring a sense of unease and apprehension to those trying to maintain their eating disorder recovery. Because holidays tend to be focused on food and the importance of family, they often present a challenge - even to those individuals who are not struggling with weight or relationship issues! Don’t let the spontaneity and unpredictability that permeate the season catch you unprepared – tune into our latest webinar with Dr. Lara Pence and Johanna Kandel. They will explore some of the struggles you may encounter during the holiday season and identify tips to help you stay on track. About the Presenters
Dr. Lara Pence, Director of Alumni Affairs, has been with The Renfrew Center for five years. She received her Doctoral degree in Psychology (PsyD) and MBA from Widener University in Philadelphia, PA. She acquired specialized training in the treatment of eating disorders while working as a primary therapist at The Renfrew Center. Additionally, she completed her post-doctoral fellowship at Children's Medical Center in Dallas, TX, working at the Center for Pediatric Eating Disorders. She has worked in inpatient, residential, and outpatient settings alike, garnering a unique expertise in all levels of care. She has conducted multiple presentations around the Dallas area, focusing on increasing awareness of eating disorder treatment and education. She has been featured on Good Morning America and the BBC discussing the struggles behind obsessive eating disorder behaviors.

Johanna Kandel, Alumni Liaison, recently joined The Renfrew Center Foundation. After recovering from a ten-year-long battle with various eating disorders, Johanna founded The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness, based in West Palm Beach, Florida. In addition, she runs free weekly support groups, mentors individuals with eating disorders and their families through their treatment and recovery, helps thousands of people gain information and find the help they need, and advocates for legislation on the local, state, and national levels. She is a member of the Eating Disorders Coalition Board of Directors, Florida team leader for NEDA’s STAR program, founding board member of the Eating Disorders Activist Network, and board member for GirlFuture. She is an active participant in National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, and has received many awards for her ongoing outreach and advocacy work, including the Jefferson Award for Public Service© and Harlequin Enterprises’ More Than Words Award. Johanna has appeared on national television programs including NBC Nightly News and The Today Show, and has been profiled in the New York Times and Glamour Magazine.
